Functional Strength Training Workout Routine: Compound Exercises to Improve Real World Performance

Every workout focusing on functional strength includes compound exercises intended to improve the connection between the nervous and muscular systems. You will be amazed at how well your body responds. Daily activities like climbing, walking, running or lifting will become almost effortless. Not only will functional strength workouts better your looks, they will improve your ability to perform everyday movements of various types. Bodyweight exercises that employ the compound technique are all you need to reach your weight loss and toning goals.

The first question on your mind might be: what is functional strength? Functional strength encompasses more than just improvements in athletic performance. It is part of all your daily activities. Functional strength training merely improves your performance in everyday activities. Fundamental tasks such as hauling loads of laundry, moving furniture, running to catch a cab, or toting a young child are all activities which rely on functional strength capabilities.

Functional strength training involves performing to make your muscles stronger so that your increases strength can benefit you not only in your exercises but also in your day to day activities. Since physical movements are of a neuromuscular nature, in that they use both your mind and your bodily power, the most effective exercises for enhancing functional strength really just require you to work on the specific motions you wish you improve.

Repetition of particular movements can be a great way to add such strength, though you can also use the power of the transfer effect to be had from performing related types of movements. To most effectively transfer strength gains, components such as coordination, type of contraction, speed of movement, and range of motion, need to be similar.

A terrific aspect of functional strength training is the fact that you can customize your regimen to encompass just those motions you wish to improve most. In my opinion, the best form of training utilizes compound movements since they incorporate your entire body. For an activity that involves pulling a heavy object off the ground, isolation exercises such as bicep curls won’t help you as much as practicing the clean and press. Workouts comprised of compound exercises are a terrific method of combining every single relevant aspect.

I find that bodyweight exercises are a great way to include compound exercises in a functional strength training routine. Such movements utilize a wide array of muscles and also make use of the elements most able to facilitate strength transfers.

I do not, however, mean to suggest that weightlifting plays no role in a good functional training regimen. Indeed, several of the strength training movements I like best utilize weights. Particularly good at increasing strength are deadlifts, in which you must utilize the full body to lift weight up from the ground. The movement I like best, though, is the clean and press, because it requires you to pull weight up from the ground explosively, and then raise it over your head. This kind of lifting uses much more of your body than a simple lift. Kettebells are excellent at improving functional strength as well. As with any workout routine, it’s important not to train to failure and to ensure that your body has adequate time to rest between workouts.

The best way to improve functional strength training exercises is to practice a motion over and over. It is possible to be very innovative in creating your workouts, and incorporate many everyday movements using only the things around you. Mix these movements up with those than involve compound movements like clean and press, or deadlift to keep from becoming bored with your routine. These compound movements will help your body when it comes time to execute a variety of motions.
